Whistler. Dandy and Disruptor

Now on · 16 October 2026 – 10 January 2027 · Included in the museum ticket

From 16 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, the Van Gogh Museum presents Whistler. Dandy and Disruptor: the first retrospective of James McNeill Whistler (1834–1903) ever held in the Netherlands, and the largest in Europe in thirty years. Some 100 works show the painter and printmaker who insisted that art needs no story, no moral and no message: it exists for its beauty alone.

The exhibition is organised by the Van Gogh Museum and The Mesdag Collection, in collaboration with Tate Britain in London, where it was shown earlier in 2026.

Highlights of the Exhibition

Whistler’s Mother (1871). Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, one of the most famous portraits in the world, travels from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Whistler called it an “arrangement” on purpose: for him it was a study in tone and form, not a sentimental portrait.

The White Girls. In Symphony in White No. 3 (1865–67, Barber Institute of Fine Arts) Whistler paints white on white, the way a composer writes a variation. The musical titles were his way of saying the painting is about colour and harmony, not about a story.

The nocturnes. Whistler’s misty night views of the Thames, painted in thin veils of blue and gold, are among the most radical paintings of the 19th century. When the critic John Ruskin accused him of “flinging a pot of paint in the public’s face”, Whistler sued him for libel, and won.

Early masterpieces and society portraits. From At the Piano (1858–59, Taft Museum of Art), painted in Paris when Whistler was in his twenties, to Variations in Violet and Green (1871, Musée d’Orsay) and his life-size portraits of London society.

Why Whistler at the Van Gogh Museum?

Vincent and his brother Theo admired Whistler all their lives. Vincent mentions Whistler’s prints in several letters, and in a letter to his sister Willemien he wrote about the portrait of Whistler’s mother, connecting it to memories of his own mother and to Dutch painting.

Both artists were fascinated by Japanese prints, and both wanted to push painting beyond the rules of the academy. Seeing the two side by side in one visit is the real reason to go now: the Whistler exhibition and Van Gogh’s own masterpieces are under one roof, on one ticket.

Whistler and the Netherlands

Whistler visited the Netherlands at least eleven times between 1863 and 1902. He revered Rembrandt, used old Dutch paper for the warm glow it gave his etchings, and in 1889 made his Amsterdam Set of etchings from a boat on the canals, work he called his best to date. “Holland is the country for artists,” he wrote. “It has atmosphere.”

That story is told in the companion exhibition Whistler. Loving the Netherlands at The Mesdag Collection in The Hague, during the same period. It shows his Dutch etchings and his influence on painters such as George Hendrik Breitner and Willem Witsen.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Choose a quiet slot: the first slot of the day (09:00) and the late Friday opening (until 21:00) are the calmest times to see a major exhibition.
  • Plan around three hours: most visitors spend about 2 to 2.5 hours on the permanent collection. Add an hour for the Whistler exhibition.
  • Guided tours in Dutch: the museum runs Dutch-language Whistler tours on Thursdays at 9:30, Saturdays at 11:00 and Sundays at 15:00 (€7.50 on top of admission, €10 from 1 January 2027).
  • Arrive 15 minutes early: have your mobile ticket ready at the glass entrance hall on Museumplein.
  • Combine with The Hague: The Mesdag Collection is under an hour by train from Amsterdam Centraal.
